Primary Purpose of Position:Are you looking for a WILD job? Do you love working around nature, animals and working with passionate people who support the natural world. The North Carolina Zoo is looking for a motivated Emergency Telecommunicator to play a vital role in the safety and operational flow of the Zoo. This position is responsible for answering and processing calls for service throughout the 2800-acre Zoo. Operators are also responsible for monitoring fire and security alarm systems, as well as monitoring camera systems throughout the Zoo. This role requires flexibility, as scheduling is based on departmental needs and may include day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts. Strong communication, organization, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential for success in this role. Position also provides administrative support for the Emergency Operations Manager. This position has normal operating hours from 8:00am- 5:00pm rotating schedule for section needs. This position will be scheduled to work weekends and/or weekday evening or nightly special events outside the normally scheduled hours.

  • Must be able to work a rotating, 7 day schedule including weekends and holidays
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to see and hear to enter data and respond to radio communications
  • Must be able to obtain certification by the Association of Public Communications Operators (APCO) within one year employment
  • Must be able to obtain Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification within one year of employment
  • Must be able to obtain First Aid, CPR and AED certification within one year of employment
